Night Migration

Image

This painting is inspired by the trilling songs and flight sounds of night migrating birds. For decades I’ve heard flocks of Sandhill Cranes, long before I see them, which is always thrilling. Navigating the stars with them are male Baltimore Orioles, Red Breasted Grosbeaks, Indigo Buntings, Golden Cheek Warblers, Thrushes and others. In Spring the males migrate two weeks before the females to establish their territory and build their nests. I find nature’s rhythmic cycles deeply reassuring. How I wish I could sing and fly with them.
